This program uses markup such as "++markup" and "markup++" to mark the beginning and end of each part. For example, to make changes to the tab names, change the text between "++ tab1" and "tab1 ++" as seen below the instructions. This will automatically change the tab name - after saving and reloading the page.

TABLE INSTRUCTIONS

Tables may be difficult to read because they can not contain line breaks (pressing the return key). This is because Squarespace inserts code at each line break that will make huge gaps in the table. For ease of reading, you can add line breaks while editing. But before saving, always REMOVE ALL LINE BREAKS. Keep one space around each markup tag.

READ MORE BUTTON INSTRUCTIONS - SPACING

If the 'Read More' button found at the bottom of each page is too high, don't use a normal Squarespace spacer block to make room. That's because Squarespace spacers don't appear in mobile mode. Instead, Use a Squarespace code block with the following code to give extra room:

Code Block Spacer -> <p>&nbsp;</p>

++answerIntroduction

Congratulations on preparing to take the first step to becoming an officer in the United States Air Force! The AFOQT is an important exam for many reasons, but mostly because it lets the Air Force know where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and how they can best utilize your abilities. It gives them a glimpse of your raw abilities in a few subjects, but will also test your ability to stay calm under pressure.

Some sections, such as Math and Science, will test your raw knowledge and intellect, not to mention how hard you prepared (or not) for the exam. Other sections are deceptively simple, in that the task is something you might think a six-year-old could do. Th e catch though is that you have an absurdly short amount of time on these sections and the task is usually designed to seem easier than it is. Their goal, in this case, is to see how you respond when the odds are stacked against you, and you know that you won’t be able to finish. Do you panic and make mistakes, or push through diligently and do your best?

This study guide will prepare you for both aspects of this challenging exam. The AFOQT is a competitive test, so you need to aim high... no pun intended.answer++

++answerHow to Use This Guide

This guide is not meant to waste your time on superfluous information or concepts you’ve already learned. Instead, this guide will help you master the most important test topics and also develop critical test-taking skills.

To support this effort, the guide provides:

  • organized concepts with detailed explanations

  • practice questions with worked-through solutions

  • key test-taking strategies

  • simulated one-on-one tutor experience

  • tips, tricks, and test secrets

Because we have eliminated the filler and fluff, you’ll be able to work through the guide at a significantly faster pace than you would with other test prep books. By allowing you to focus only on those concepts that will increase your score, we’ll make your study time shorter and more effective.answer++

++answerSections on the AFOQT

There are twelve sections on the AFOQT and will follow this order:

1. Verbal Analogies: 25 questions, 8 minutes

2. Arithmetic Reasoning: 25 questions, 29 minutes

3. Word Knowledge: 25 questions, 5 minutes

4. Math Knowledge: 25 questions, 22 minutes

5. Instrument Comprehension: 20 questions, 6 minutes

6. Block Counting: 20 questions, 3 minutes

Ten-minute break

7. Table Reading: 40 questions, 7 minutes

8. Aviation Information: 20 questions, 8 minutes

9. General Science: 20 questions, 10 minutes

10. Rotated Blocks: 15 questions, 13 minutes

11. Hidden Figures: 15 questions, 8 minutes

12. Self-Description Inventory: 220 questions, 40 minutes

As you can see, there are a few sections with minimal time limits, giving you only ten to fifteen seconds per question in some cases. The only section we will NOT cover in this study guide is Self-Description Inventory. This is not a section you can study for and there are no tricks here. It is simply a personality questionnaire, so be sure to be totally honest and straightforward in your answers. Don’t give answers for what you think they want to hear.answer++

++answerTest Day Procedures

On test day, be prepared for a three-and-a-half hour test day, including administrative information and instructions. You will have one ten minute break halfway through the exam. You do not want to waste time reading instructions; you should be totally familiar with those before sitting down. Pencils and paper will be provided; you may NOT use a calculator. No food or drink is allowed during the test. It is important to note that there is no wrong answer penalty on the AFOQT. Again, there is no penalty for wrong answers! This means, under no circumstance, on any section of the entire test, should you EVER leave a question blank even if it is a wild guess.answer++

++answerScoring on the AFOQT

You will be given scores in five areas:

  • Pilot

  • Navigator

  • Academic Aptitude

  • Verbal

  • Quantitative

Each score is made up of different combinations of the twelve sections of the AFOQT and each has a different minimum score. In all five cases, the scores are percentiles, which range from 1 – 99. An average score would fall in the upper 40s. It is recommended that for those who want to be a pilot, that you achieve a score of 70 or higher across all five categories. Scores in the 85 – 95 range are considered strong scores. The sections comprising each score and the minimum required score to be considered are listed below for your reference:

Pilot

The Pilot score is comprised of five sections, including Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge, Instrument Comprehension, Table Reading, and Aviation Information.

  • minimum score to be Pilot: 25

  • minimum combined Pilot and Navigator score: 50 (must have at least 10 Navigator score)

Navigator

The Navigator score is comprised of six sections, including Verbal Analogies, Arithmetic Reasoning, Math Knowledge, Block Counting, Table Reading, and General Science.

  • minimum score to be Navigator: 25

  • minimum combined Pilot and Navigator score: 50 (must have at least 10 Pilot score)

Academic Aptitude

The Academic Aptitude score is comprised of four sections, including Verbal Analogies, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, and Math Knowledge. There is no minimum score; it is a composite of Math and Verbal sections.

Verbal

The Verbal score is comprised of two sections, including Verbal Analogies and Word Knowledge. The minimum score for all candidates is 15.

Quantitative

The Quantitative score is comprised of two sections, including Arithmetic Reasoning and Math Knowledge. The minimum score for all candidates is 10.answer++

++answerAdditional Important Information

One of the most important factors to take into consideration is that you may only take the AFOQT twice. Never, ever think of the first exam as a “practice round.” You need to study diligently and do your absolute best the very first time you take it.

If you decide to take the exam a second time, keep in mind you must wait 180 days (six months), and your second score will become your official score, even if you do worse! Your most recent score is the only one anyone will see. In some extremely rare circumstances, you might secure a waiver to take the AFOQT a third time, but that is highly unlikely for most candidates.

Finally, it is important to consider that the USAF looks at the whole package you send them. For example, if the average score for candidates who earn a pilot position is 90, just because you might only have an 85 does not mean it is impossible to win a spot. Conversely, just because you have a 99 does not automatically guarantee anything. They will look at your entire application package, including your GPA and the other four scores you receive.

One more time, just to be sure: do not ever leave a question blank! You will better understand as you work through the different sections just how short the time limits are. Do not allow yourself to be caught off guard with only five seconds left and not enough time to fill in any answers before the buzzer. You must maintain situational awareness of the clock, which is best done by practicing under timed conditions.answer++
